The government has recently completed a crucial cybersecurity audit of 15 federal ministries, divisions, and attached departments under the “Cyber Security for Digital Pakistan (Phase-I)” project. This initiative is designed to enhance the country’s digital resilience, protect critical infrastructure, and safeguard digital assets from the rising threat of cyberattacks.

Project Overview: Enhancing Digital Resilience

With increasing cyber threats targeting both public and private sectors, the government has stepped up efforts to fortify its digital infrastructure. The IT Ministry’s initiative, which began under the “Cyber Security for Digital Pakistan (Phase-I)” project, has already made significant progress in improving national cybersecurity protocols.

Funding and Utilization

As of now, a total of Rs. 1,076.17 million (60% of the total allocation) has been utilized for the project, out of the total Rs. 1,798.864 million allocated for this initiative. The remaining funds will be used for continued development of technical infrastructure and the establishment of key cybersecurity facilities.

Next Steps and Allocation for FY 2025-26

For the fiscal year 2025-26, an additional Rs. 250 million has been allocated to continue setting up vital cybersecurity infrastructure, including the National Security Operation Center, forensics facilities, and screening labs.

Cybersecurity Initiatives: Key Accomplishments

One of the most impressive aspects of the project is the active response to cyber threats. The government has already addressed more than 800 cyberattacks and incidents. The establishment of the National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT) has been pivotal in detecting and responding to these threats.

Cybersecurity Policies and Guidelines

To ensure long-term effectiveness, the government has focused on developing national cybersecurity policies, issuing guidelines, and collaborating internationally for intelligence sharing. So far, over 60 cybersecurity advisories have been issued to various government ministries, private organizations, and the general public.

  • 15 cybersecurity policy guidelines have been implemented.
  • 20 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed with universities, think tanks, and cybersecurity firms.
  • 56 training sessions delivered to federal and provincial government institutions.

Workshops and Public Awareness Campaigns

Public engagement has also been a priority, with over 15 workshops, hackathons, and bootcamps organized to enhance knowledge and awareness. Additionally, specialized training sessions have been conducted to strengthen cybersecurity expertise at both the federal and provincial levels.

Several public awareness initiatives have also been launched to promote secure digital practices, including programs like:

  • ABC Program
  • CyberSecureGov
  • CyberSafety for Everyone
  • Junior Cyber Superheroes

Looking Ahead: Continued Growth in Cybersecurity Efforts

As the digital landscape evolves, so too does the need for stronger cybersecurity measures. With continued investment in both technology and human resources, Pakistan is moving towards building a more resilient digital future. The successful completion of the cybersecurity audit is just the beginning, and the government remains committed to keeping the nation’s digital infrastructure secure from the growing threat of cybercrime.

Conclusion: Why This Matters

In today’s digital age, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. This audit represents a significant step towards ensuring that Pakistan’s government institutions and citizens are better protected from cyber threats. As more initiatives roll out, the goal is to create a robust system where all digital assets are safeguarded, making it a safer environment for the country’s digital future.
